Rhythm beads are used to enhance a natural rhythm. Much like a metronome for timed beats, the gentle sounds of the bells accentuates the rythm of the horse’s gaits and encourages your horse to follow a tempo or cadence as well as have a very calming effect for both horse and rider. The soft rhythmic jingle of the bells helps to eliminate outside distractions that may startle the horse and you can feel and hear the gaits, the timing and counting of strides. The jingle of the bells often helps the horse move into a more even and consistent gait. It may also help the rider keep his own movement coordinated with those of their horse.
The Rhythm Beads are not new to the horse scene. The Native Americans would adorn their horses with beads, shells and feathers. They believed the adornments held great powers that would keep a horse and rider safe.
The beads were not only functional; they each served a specific purpose; the more common ones were to protect both horse and rider from danger in battle, to bring good luck, help ward off evil spirits, and show the status, and achievements, of both horse and rider.
The name rhythm beads is important because that is perhaps the single greatest attribute to use–rhythm. Being a good rider/partner involves understanding and feeling gaits, lead changes, etc. Rhythm beads help the rider (simply by hearing) determine the proper cues and responses to gait changes.
They help the horse by minimising distractions as the horse focuses on the steady sound of the necklace bells rather than the often startling sounds of the arena/trail.
